Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s rescue beagle Mamma Mia has captured new attention four years after the couple adopted her. The Beagle Freedom Project recently posted a video about the dog, who is known as Mia by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Mia was rescued in 2022 after the Envigo breeding facility was shut down. The organization said she had been part of the animal testing industry before her rescue. Clips from previous years show Mia caring for a litter of puppies before she found a permanent home with Meghan and Harry.

“This is Mamma Mia. She was rescued from the animal testing industry when the Envigo breeding facility was shut down in 2022,” the BFP said in the clip.
According to the Beagle Freedom Project, the Duchess of Sussex personally contacted founder and president Shannon Keith because she was interested in adopting Mia. The former royal couple later visited the organization and spent time with the dog and her puppies. The Duchess reportedly made it clear that she wanted to adopt an adult dog instead of choosing a puppy. As a result, Mia joined the Sussex family, which includes their black Labrador, Pula, and Meghan’s rescue beagle Guy, who later died in January 2025.

Mia recently appeared again in a video from Meghan’s 45th birthday celebration. While Meghan and Harry danced in their kitchen, Mia rolled around on the floor wearing a silver party hat, as Pula carried another hat in her mouth. Since her adoption, Mia has also appeared in Meghan’s Netflix lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, and in social media posts connected to her As Ever brand.
