King Charles III is once again back in the spotlight of the international media ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The King has just approved a one-off bank holiday in Scotland to celebrate the national team’s first FIFA World Cup appearance in nearly three decades.

Scotland is set to make their grand return to the competition for the very first time since 1998. That’s why King Charles III has granted a holiday, which will take place on Monday 15 June, following Scotland’s opening match against Haiti, which is scheduled to kick off in Boston on the evening of 14 June local time.

King Charles III will be celebrating the FIFA tournament

John Swinney, Scotland’s First Minister, explained this extra day would allow supporters to celebrate the national team’s historic qualification and recover after watching the late-night fixture:  “I want as many people as possible to enjoy and celebrate this moment.”

However, King Charles III might be in the eye of the storm after he granted a bank holiday for Scotland’s World Cup return. The King didn’t introduce a holiday for England during previous major tournaments.
