KPop Demon Hunters is gearing up for round two, with Netflix and Sony locking plans to bring the animated musical sequel to screens in 2029, as first reported by Bloomberg. Oftentimes, animated films need long production timelines, which explains the 4-year gap from the first installment. The premiere could still shift if the schedule changes, so take the 2029 potential release date with a grain of salt.
The first KPop Demon Hunters movie, developed and produced by Sony Pictures Animation, went straight to Netflix under a licensing pact and became the platform’s most-viewed movie to date. In addition, its soundtrack has turned into a global smash hit, with the main single “Golden” reaching the No.1 spot on Billboard and grabbing multiple Grammy nominations. Meanwhile, fans rushed into theaters in August and October 2025 when Netflix hosted sing-along event screenings.

The chatter around a second film started circulating following the success of the first installment. Co-director Maggie Kang told Variety in July that the team seeded backstory threads and unanswered questions that a sequel could explore:
“Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes.”
