A revelation from Prince Harry’s childhood resurfaced in June, 2026. The Duke of Sussex previously reflected on a difficult moment from his teenage years at Eton College, revealing that a comment from his older brother, Prince William, left him feeling isolated when he arrived at the prestigious boarding school. Prince Harry entered Eton in 1998, less than a year after the death of his mother, Princess Diana, on August 31, 1997. In his 2023 memoir “Spare,” a now-grown-up Harry described the transition as challenging and emotionally overwhelming. Hoping his brother would help him adjust to Eton, Prince Harry instead recalled Prince William had asked him to pretend “I didn’t know him.”

“He was forging his own life, and he wasn’t willing to give that up,” Harry wrote in his 2023 book, Spare.

According to Harry, Prince William had already established his own life and friendships at Eton and wanted to maintain his independence. The Duke of Sussex also admitted that the experience was painful at the time. Due to their relationship at school, Prince Harry found comfort in sports, including rugby, soccer, cricket, and polo. He later said that sports held him together, helping him cope with the pressures he faced during those years.

The story has resurfaced as Eton prepares to welcome another royal family student. On June 16, 2026, Kensington Palace confirmed that Prince George will begin attending Eton in September 2026. The decision ended years of speculation about where Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton would send their eldest son. By choosing Eton, the Wales couple selected the same institution that played a major role in Prince William’s educational path and royal upbringing.
