The Special Service Medal has officially become the second permanent Canadian honour to be redesignated for the reign of King Charles III. The medal was first presented on September 10, 2025, to 27 recipients deployed with Air Task Force Prestwick in Scotland.
The updated medal, now bearing The King’s Royal Cypher, was granted to Captain Andrew Cameron, who received the inaugural medal. The iconic medal was first created by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The special medal recognises members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) who serve under exceptional circumstances. It has become an honorable medal as it signifies specific service, including ALERT, NATO, RANGER, EXPEDITION, and DISTANTIA.
