HBO has officially confirmed that House of the Dragon will end with Season 4. The network explained that the series was always planned as a four-season show focused on the Targaryen civil war. The announcement comes as part of HBO’s long-term strategy to continue expanding the world connected to the original Game of Thrones series.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, affirmed that the series was supposed to follow the historical events of the Targaryen family. He also explained that readers of the books already know where this period of Westeros naturally concludes. The production team is currently finishing post-production for Season 3 while beginning early development on the final season.
Meanwhile, showrunner Ryan Condal is overseeing the work on both seasons. Episode numbers for Season 4 have not yet been confirmed, and HBO has not ruled out a longer final season, though this has not been announced yet. House of the Dragon Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in summer 2026. The final season is expected to be released in 2028. At the same time, HBO continues to develop other projects set in the same fictional universe, including renewing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a second season, an animated series from Genndy Tartakovsky, and a potential sequel focused on Arya Stark.
