The trailer for The History of Sound, starring Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal, is finally here. The film is set in the World War I era, and follows characters David and Lionel as they fall in love while bonding over American folk stories. Their journey starts at the Boston Conservatory in 1917 and takes them on a mission across the country, with each moment collecting the voices of countrymen around America.

The film premiered at Cannes in May and earned a Palme d’Or nomination. Now, it is set to hit US theaters on September 12 and Canada on September 19, 2025. Early reviews are mostly positive, with a current 65 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The soundtrack has also been well-received due to its haunting and dreamy instrumentation.

With all of these ingredients, the upcoming movie has been compared to other gay films like Call Me By Your Name and Brokeback Mountain. Stil, some critics say it leans more into bittersweet reflection than steamy chemistry. But that does not make it any less powerful. Instead, it explores how short-lived love can linger forever, shaping the characters as the story progresses. Get ready for its premiere on September 12!
