KATSEYE’s “Gnarly,” the song that everybody initially hated, is now climbing the charts

Carlos Gaviria

KATSEYE’s chaotic anthem “Gnarly” just earned them a Billboard Hot 100 debut! The hyper-pop track landed at No. 92 on May 13, marking the girl group’s first-ever Hot 100 entry. Less than a year after debuting, Sophia, Manon, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae are already making bold music moves.

“Gnarly” is part electronic, part hyperpop, and 100% insane. The song tosses K-pop rulebooks out the window, delivering a messy, loud mix of beats and tongue-in-cheek lyrics. The song can be streamed in the explicit or clean version, which swaps “Tesla” to “robotics” and “I’m the sh*t” to “I’m legit.” The official video features the group members owning their rebellious flair, delivering an edgy choreography, and literally serving all types of “gnarly” food.

The track and music video were initially met with mixed to negative reviews, especially from fans who weren’t here for the lyrics, wild production alleged inappropriate music video scenes. However, the track has slowly been climbing up the charts, also hitting the  No. 39 on Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S., No. 47 on the Global 200, No. 52 in the UK, and No. 60 on Spotify’s Top Songs Global. Plus, they’re back at No. 11 on the Emerging Artists chart.

In short? Gnarly!
