When people reflect on King Charles III’s dating history, they usually think of the start of his dramatic relationship with the late Princess Diana, and subsequently his marriage with Queen Camilla Parker. However, the now-king of the United Kingdom was meant to marry Richard Nixon’s eldest daughter, Tricia Nixon Cox.

The former Prince Charles, visited the United States in 1970 when he was living the time of his life. The then president, Richard Nixon, was determined to play matchmaker between the alleged couple. However, his plan was out of his hands.

David Charter, a royal author, wrote “Royal Audience: 70 Years, 13 Presidents – One Queen’s Special Relationship with America,” where he detailed the King’s relationship with Tricia Nixon Cox in the early stages of their arranged relationship.

“Before Charles came to America, Richard Nixon was invited to have lunch with Queen Elizabeth in the summer of 1969. When Nixon shook hands with Charles,” he told him, “both of my daughters follow you very closely.”

Tricia and King Charles III had several public appearances during his visit to America, including Basketball games and public events. Charter even commented the monarch of the United Kingdom joked about Nixon’s desires to marry him off with Tricia because he was eagerly waiting for something to happen, and subsequently increase his bond with the British monarchy.

King Charles III spoiled all plans of marrying and reuniting two of the most powerful families at the time by expanding his dating history. He even was called the “playboy” prince until he married the late Princess Diana in 1981. The couple divorced after 15 years of marriage, and King Charles III married Queen Camilla Parker in 2005, leaving Richard Nixon’s aspirations on the floor.
