There has been a lot of speculation from British media outlets regarding King Charles III’s current health status. The concerning situation has raised several questions regarding the future of the monarchy, including what could happen in case King Charles III dies sooner than everyone expects.

King Charles III ascended to the throne after his mother Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022. The rising reign had troubles in paradise after the Monarch of the United Kingdom was diagnosed with cancer, nearly three weeks after his procedure for an elongated prostate surgery. Despite the reports, the King has allegedly worsened over the days.

Here's what you need to know about Operation Menai Bridge, King Charles III’s funeral plan

The British people are already asking if the Operation Menai Bridge is already planned. This operation is the code name for the plans in place after King Charles III’s death. The name refers to a suspension bridge spanning the Menai Strait between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. The code names for royal funeral plans were to prevent any leaking to the press before an official announcement.

The Daily Beast learned that King Charles III’s funeral plans have been regularly updated since April 2024. Operation Menai Bridge is expected to play out similarly to Operation London Bridge following the Queen’s death. After King Charles III dies, Prince William is set to become the King, while Kate Middleton would become the Queen consort.

The Prime minister would be informed of the news by the Monarch’s private secretary, while others, like the cabinet secretary and Privy Council Office, senior ministers, and officials are going to be told about the information almost immediately. Following King Charles III’s death, an “official notification” is going to be issued to the public, and flags at Whitehall are expected to be lowered to half-mast.
