Wicked: For Good is bringing some updates to theaters in 2025, and Nessarose is getting a serious change-up. While the first movie stayed loyal to the Broadway show, the sequel is changing some aspects of Nessarose that could mark a big contrast in comparison to the original play. And the reason for the change? It’s just an answer to adapt to today’s viewers.

In the Broadway musical, Elphaba uses magic to let Nessarose walk, which sparked controversy over the message it could send about disability in the film. Consequently, lyricist Stephen Schwartz explained that the goal is to avoid the idea that someone’s life is magically “fixed” when their disability disappears. Schartz then expressed that this change is a way for the film to be “respectful” as they “find a way” to tell the story.
Stephen Schwartz has revealed that the scene in which Nessarose regains the ability to walk will not be included in ‘Wicked: For Good’, in a decision made out of respect for the PCD community. pic.twitter.com/8TtMlWJwqd

Additionally, Nessarose will have someone crushing on her, but she’s too wrapped up in her obsession with Boq to notice. That emotional tunnel vision will push her toward darker choices, showing how love and power can twist even the best intentions. These updates will give her a richer, more dynamic role that could finally silence the old criticism and give fans something fresh to love.
Mark your calendars, Wicked lovers, because the second part will premiere on November 21, 2025.
