We could say that in the United States one of the biggest festivities is undoubtedly Halloween and we can prove it with the large amount of content we have from the North American country, from books to series, movies and of course, many costumes.
It is known that the holiday began in Europe and gradually spread around the world, but undoubtedly, the United States has known how to celebrate it and has already become an exhibitor of Halloween, but that has led to a question about why this holiday has so much relevance outside the continent from where it originated.
Why Halloween is so important in the USA
All Hallows ‘Eve, or Halloween, is the eve and is celebrated every October 31. Samhain, a pagan festival celebrated by the Celts 2,000 years ago, is the source of Halloween. Northwest France, Ireland and the United Kingdom initially celebrated the festival and from there the tradition has been shared around the world.
The holiday became popular every year since it arrived in the United States with Irish immigrants in the mid-19th century, and now it’s already the ideal time to gather with family and friends to trick-or-treat or watch scary movies.
“It was when the Irish immigrants arrived that the celebrations really took root in the United States and they had the practice of going door to door, asking for fruits and nuts and things like that,” said Nagy, a professor in the Department of Celtic Languages and Literature at Harvard University.
After dressing up in costume, in the United States, you walk the streets of your neighborhood to ask for the famous “trick or treat” to accumulate as much candy in your pumpkin as possible. So Halloween is extremely important because it is a great commercial expression, due to the sale of costumes and candy, as well as the union of friends and family to celebrate it.
