KPop Demon Hunters is crushing it! The animated Netflix movie about the fictional girl group HUNTR/X battling demon villains has become a breakout hit. Sony Pictures Animation already had a strong track record with films like Into the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs. the Machines, but this film struck a different kind of chord with different types of audiences.

A big reason? K-pop power! At its core, the film takes clues from already-existing (and very popular) K-pop groups and their members, such as BLACKPINK’s Jennie, EXO’s Kai, Stray Kids’ Felix, and BTS’ Jimin. In addition, the movie blends music, choreography, interesting characters, and stunning animation. To top things off, HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys (the antagonist boy group) feel like real K-pop idols, and the attention to detail in their music, fashion, and performances makes the film feel authentic.

Since its release, the movie has stayed on Netflix’s global Top 10 for five weeks straight, and it’s now the most-watched original animated movie on the platform, topping even The Mitchells and Pinocchio. The cherry on top? Its soundtrack has become a worldwide smash, with hits like “Golden” and “Soda Pop” climbing up the charts in different countries. With fan faves like Rumi, Zoey, and Mira leading the charge, it’s safe to say this isn’t the last we’ll see of them. A sequel feels like only a matter of time!
