The production uses a real mall and a playful commercial concept
The mall featured in the video is a real location in Croydon, England, that was redesigned to look like a nostalgic mall from the 1990s. One of the main scenes includes a fictional commercial for an “Opalite” spray that promises to fix people’s problems. In addition, the video includes a parody product called “Nope Alite,” which appears during a store scene. Taylor Swift herself was personally involved in designing small props used in the video and reviewing footage during filming.
It all began during a television appearance in 2025
The “Blank Space” singer revealed that the idea for the video came to her during her appearance on The Graham Norton Show in October 2025, the same month her album “The Life of a Showgirl” was released. During the program, Domhnall Gleeson joked about wanting to appear in one of her music videos. Interestingly, the joke made Taylor imagine a group project with the rest of the guests, Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, JodieSmith, and Lewis Capaldi, which would later turn into the “Opalite” music video.
“When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light-hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos. He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea*.”
