After Taylor Swift released her new album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” rumors have increased over her beef with Charli XCX. The American artist and songwriter has just released a diss track with one particular person in mind.
“Actually Romantic” is about an unnamed fellow popstar, who social media has speculated it’s Charli XCX. In addition, Taylor held a cinema screening to promote her new album, revealing that the song is “a love letter to someone who hates you”.
Despite not naming Charli XCX, she sarcastically thanked them for paying her attention by saying, “It’s flattering.” Online communities are convinced this is a response to Charli XCX’s song, “Sympathy is a Knife.”
The short intro to “Actually Romantic” Swift sheds new light on its meaning, saying it’s about realizing unexpectedly that you’re part of someone else’s story:
“There can be this moment where it’s unveiled to you, through things that they do that are very overt, and, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve just started to be like, ‘Oh my God, you did so much with this. It’s flattering. That is, wow, that is very, very sweet of you to think about me this much, even if it’s negative. In my industry, attention is affection, and you’ve given me a whole lot of it.”
