The UK’s Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced plans to revive National Service, making it mandatory for all 18-year-olds to either join the armed forces or dive into community volunteer work for a year.
The plans were announced on May 26 and it doesn’t spare anyone—not even the youngest royals. The Conservatory Party in the UK spilled the info to The Telegraph, stating that royal kiddos will be expected to participate just like any other British person their age. The initiative could see around 30,000 18-year-olds per year wearing military uniforms or giving back to their communities with essential services like the NHS or the fire department..
“This bold new model will open up a world of opportunity. It will make sure young people in the U.K. get the same chance in life as their peers in allies like Sweden, Norway, Denmark and France — which have all recently introduced or announced new forms of national service,” the Prime Minister said.
