“In our approach to Gray’s work we decided to dispense with literary devices that invited us to see the story from the point of view of one character or another. Actually, it wasn’t a difficult decision because, from the beginning, my interest lay entirely in the character of Bella Baxter,” Lanthimos confesses.

If you have no idea what the Poor Things movie is about here is the synopsis by Film Affinity:

Bella Baxter is a young girl brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she lacks, Bella escapes with Duncan Wedderburn, a sophisticated and wicked lawyer, on a dizzying adventure across continents. Free from the prejudices of her time, Bella becomes steadfast in her determination to stand up for equality and liberation.
