The quintet of four South Korean girls, and an Australian one, NewJeans is now the biggest, most popular Kpop group on the Melon hitlists, occupying the first three spots in the Monthly Hits, making them the first girl group and third group in general to achieve this.
Melon is the most popular streaming service platform in South Korea, and in their last Hits of the Month list for January 2023, we can find the monster rookie group NewJeans taking the whole Top 3 of the chart, with their hits “Hype Boy” in the third place, “OMG” in the second, and the global phenomenon, “Ditto” in the first place, just like that, peerlessly.
Mind you, this group made their debut less than a year ago, on August 1st of 2022, which makes this achievement twice as impressive.
The Melon hitlists have a formula which counts the amount of streams that a song gets and it counts as 40% of the score, while the other 60% is composed of downloads, or sales. Meaning that a song needs to be not only very popular in streams, but it also need to be getting more listeners from new downloads to stay on top.
Other groups with monumental debuts such as BLACKPINK or TWICE, who are considered the biggest girl groups in the industry, did not achieve such thing, not even close as a matter of fact. With that in mind, are we to predict an even bigger success for the NewJeans girls, than what BLACKPINK and TWICE achieved?
