Netflix confirms Jacob Tierney’s new historical drama

Netflix confirmed that Jacob Tierney is developing a new series titled Alexander, serving as writer, director, and executive producer. The reveal was made as Tierney continued building momentum following the success of his show, Heated Rivalry. On the same day the news was announced, Heated Rivalry won Outstanding New TV Series at the 2026 GLAAD Media Awards on March 5, 2026. Tierney, Brendan Brady, and members of the cast, including protagonist Connor Storrie, attended the event. In addition, Brady will join Alexander as an executive producer, along with Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan of Aggregate Films.

Netflix executive Jinny Howe praised Tierney and said the company was excited to work with him on the series.

“Jacob Tierney is one of the most exciting, in-demand creative voices working today, and we are thrilled to work with him on Alexander,” Howe said.

The series adapts a novel about Aristotle and Alexander

Alexander is based on The Golden Mean, a novel written by Canadian author Annabel Lyon in 2009.  The book won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and presents a fictional version of the relationship between Aristotle and Alexander the Great. The novel reimagines their bond in a more personal and dramatic way, instead of a strict historical narrative. According to Netflix, the story starts as the Athenian empire is crumbling, and Aristotle arrives in Macedonia to tutor Alexander. The streaming company described the adaptation as a “high-stakes drama” that will capture global audiences.

Casting and release details have not been announced

As of March 14, 2026,  Netflix has not announced any cast members for Alexander. The lead actors for Alexander and Aristotle will likely be among the first revealed when production moves forward. In Lyon’s novel, Alexander begins the story as a teenager, while Aristotle is already an adult, so viewers are already curious about how the series will approach the age gap. A release date is yet to be announced, as Alexander has only just received a straight-to-series order, which means production has not started. Jacob Tierney is also currently working on season 2 of Heated Rivalry, which is expected to begin production in summer 2026 and is expected to premiere in April 2027.
