Harry Styles recently opened up about how difficult it was to deal with grief after the death of Liam Payne. In an interview published on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, on Apple Music 1’s The Zane Lowe Show, the “Aperture” singer said he struggled with the pressure to publicly express his feelings. He shared that even talking about Liam Payne’s passing still feels hard, revealing that it was difficult to have people wanting him to show his grief in a specific way. His comments marked a rare and honest look at this topic, which the singer had previously only mentioned in a statement after his bandmate’s passing.
“I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with kind of like acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief in a way,” the singer revealed.
The “Watermelon Sugar” singer revealed he had strong personal feelings about losing his friend, but also felt the strange experience of being watched while grieving. His comments reflect the response after Liam Payne died on October 7, 2024, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after falling from a hotel balcony. He went on to describe how hard it was for him to lose a friend who was just like him in many ways.
“It’s so difficult to lose a friend,” the “As It Was” hitmaker said. “It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways.”

Following his death, fans looked to the One Direction members, including Harry Styles, for official statements. Back then, the artist shared both a personal message and a joint statement with members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson. His rare comments on the late Liam Payne came shortly before the release of his album “Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally,” scheduled for release on March 6, 2026. The project is his first album in four years since the Grammy-winning project “Harry’s House” and also his first album since Liam Payne’s death.
