In recent reports, Forbes slaps the Grammys, expressing their position about its new Asian Pop Category while backing BTS’s decision to skip the awards.
On August 2nd, the magazine releases an opinion report written by Olivia Shalhoup in which she points out that the creation of her new category, ‘Best Asian Pop Music Performance,’ generates unequal application in the awards.
The article explains why the group is against this category: “the existence of a geography-coded lane, whatever its stated intent, signals where the Academy expects Asian pop to live,” and how non-marginalized groups do not receive this treatment.
“Nobody created a ‘Best European Pop Music Performance’ category for Dua Lipa or Ed Sheeran. The absence of a mirror category for majority-white regional pop is the tell that these fields, however generously intended, are not applied evenly across the map.”
This statement draws attention to social networks among fans who are supporting BTS’ decision of not submitting their music to their next Grammys edition and showing their dissatisfaction with the awards for this controversial category.
