The story behind the stage name
BTS’ SUGA recently revealed the real meaning behind his stage name, and even his group members were surprised by the explanation. During a recent episode of Wired’s autocomplete interview series, the boy group answered popular online questions about BTS and their individual careers. In this segment, SUGA took the opportunity to properly explain the meaning of his name after seeing a prompt asking about it. For a long time, many fans believed the name came from “shooting guard,” a basketball position. However, the rapper admitted that it was only the shorter and easier version of the story.
The name came from boxing and rap technique
SUGA explained that the name was inspired by the nickname “Suga,” which is associated with fighter Sean O’Malley. This name also connects to boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. He said the name is often linked to people known for technical striking skills.
“There’s a legendary boxer named Sugar Ray Leonard. So people who have technical striking skills, the specialists, are called Suga,” he explained.
According to SUGA, HYBE founder Bang Si Hyuk, who apparently is a boxing fan, told him years ago that because his rap style was technical, “Suga” would suit him. In the end, he confessed that this explanation always felt too “annoying,” so he decided to use the basketball “shooting guard” explanation when being asked about the meaning of his stage name.
The reveal comes during BTS’s major return in 2026
The confession arrived during an important period for BTS. The group returned with ARIRANG, their first full-length album in six years, released on March 20, 2026. The album was spending its second week at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated April 11, 2026. Meanwhile, the project’s main single, SWIM, has spent two weeks in the top 2 of the Billboard Hot 100. Finally, the group started their ARIRANG World Tour in Seoul on April 9 in Goyang, South Korea. Their global run will include 85 shows in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
