“While on vacation in December over New Year’s, what started as tonsillitis turned into critical septic shock, infecting and affecting several of my organs,” the actress, 32, wrote on her Instagram on Friday.
“You calmed my fears and sustained me through ambulances, three foreign hospitals, a week in ICU, terrifying ERs, countless scans and tests and injections, excruciating pain and so much confusion, all while we were alone on the other side of the world, far away from those we know,” she wrote. “I love you, Paul. More than I will ever be able to say.”
“And I am deeply grateful to every ICU doctor and nurse who worked tirelessly and especially to the @JoaliBeing team for responding immediately and staying with me to provide language translations and vital support,” she continued. “Endless thanks to my personal team of heroes at home who were on call with insurance, Paul, my parents and doctors around the clock (you know who you are).”
The Cleveland Clinic states that the final and most serious stage of sepsis is septic shock. When sepsis is present, the body simply overreacts to an infection, which can lead to organ failure.
“She was very sick,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She’s slowly recovering.”
