As Princes George, Charlotte, and Louis grow up, more questions arise about their upbringing under the royal family, including the reason why the young royals are not allowed to have smartphones.
Amid the questions surrounding smartphone use at Eton College, Prince George’s new school, past statements by the Prince and Princess of Wales regarding their rules at home on smartphone and social media use emerge.
Prince William revealed last year in conversation on the Apple TV+ series The Reluctant Traveler his and his wife’s position about these technological devices: “None of our children have any phones, which we’re very strict about.”
Months later, the Prince of Wales, during his trip to Brazil for the Earthshot Prize awards, admitted it was getting “really hard” to protect Prince George, Charlotte, and Louis from the harms of social media while keeping them away from smartphones as they grow.
The prince confessed that despite not having any phones, “it’s getting to the point where it’s becoming a little bit of a, like, tense issue.” He continues explaining that his children understand as they communicate all the negative sides of the use of this device.
“I think it’s the internet access I have a problem with. I think children can access too much stuff they don’t need to see online, and so having a phone and text message, the old sort of ‘brick phone’ as they call them, I think that’s fine.”
Prince William confessed that the real reason for this ban is the internet access and the negative sides of it, so he supports the brick phone to keep in touch while they can grow in a healthy environment and prepare for the online world.
