Today, 74 years ago: Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne

The late Queen Elizabeth II began her history-making reign 74 years ago Friday. The then Monarch of the United Kingdom was only 25 years old when she had to learn how to become a Queen after the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6, 1952.

Elizabeth II and her husband, the late Prince Philip, received the heartbreaking news while on a royal tour in Kenya. On June 2, 1953, the coronation ceremony was carried out and attended by peers of the realm and international political, civic, and business leaders, and was the first to be transmitted by television throughout the world.

The England's longest reign

Elizabeth II became England’s longest-reigning monarch, surpassing that of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, in 2007. She even became the first Monarch to celebrate a sapphire jubilee for 65 years on the throne in 2017.

Queen Elizabeth II’s reign was marked by a great public acceptance over decades. The Monarch made an exceptional work while reign the United Kingdom during difficult times, ultimately, Elizabeth died in peace in September 2022 at the age of 96, making King Charles III continue with her legacy.
