Filming plans and key names revealed
A United States adaptation of Netflix’s global phenomenon Squid Game is finally making real moves. On November 20, 2025, several American outlets, including Collider, reported that director David Fincher’s long-discussed project, titled Squid Game America, is gearing up for production.
According to a listing on the Film and Television Industry Alliance website, filming is set to take place on February 26 next year in Los Angeles and other California locations. Fincher is credited as the lead director, with original creator Hwang Dong Hyuk and Kim Ji Yeon of Pertsman Studio joining him as producers. Actress Cate Blanchett, who appeared in Squid Game Season 3 in the final episode, is expected to be part of the case.
A spin-off set in the same universe
Rather than a straightforward remake, Squid Game America is being developed as a spin-off that takes place in the same universe as the original Korean series. The deadly games will remain central to the story, but this version plans to explore how an American setting changes the way the competition is structured and created.
According to Collider, Fincher has not confirmed the project himself. However, this comes as the most solid update Squid Game fans have received in recent months, suggesting an expansion of the series. If filming starts early next year, the expected premiere date should come around 2028, potentially mirroring the holiday season dates of Seasons 1 and 2 of the original show.
Conflicting statements and ongoing rumors
Despite having a Film & Television Industry Alliance (FTIA) listing, fans are still confused due to mixed messages. Hwang Dong Hyuk previously said in June that there would not be another season after the release of Season 3 and clarified that references to Seong Gi Hun’s daughter studying in the United States were not teasers for future storylines.
Making things more intriguing, he also denied rumors that he would be involved in the American adaptation or that filming would begin in December. Still, he expressed admiration for David Fincher and said he would consider joining if invited. For now, Netflix has not released an official statement, leaving fans buzzing with anticipation.
