This is how Meghan Markle handles an important dessert rule for Archie and Lilibet

The Duchess of Sussex encourages her children to choose fruit from the family garden

Meghan Markle shared a simple dessert rule that she uses with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. During her appearance on MasterChef Australia in July 2026, the Duchess of Sussex revealed her children are good eaters and enjoy helping with food at home. The mother of two explained that both of her kids often “jump in” to activities around the family garden, Meghan told MasterChef judges Jean-Christophe Novelli, Poh Ling Yeow and Sofia Levin.

The Duchess revealed the family follows one main rule when the children ask for dessert. If Archie or Lilibet can pick the treat from the garden, they are allowed to have it. This usually means choosing fresh fruit from their own garden. She also said the family usually has a small “pudding” after meals, using the British term “pud” which Prince Harry commonly uses. The term is commonly used in Britain to refer to dessert after a meal.

“If they say, ‘Mama, can I have dessert?’ We say, ‘If you can pick it, you can have it,’ “ she shared.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry moved to Montecito, California, in 2020, after stepping back from the royal family. Their home includes a garden, an orchard, and a chicken coop. Their space allows them to grow food and involve their children in healthy lifestyles. Although fruit is a regular dessert choice, the Duchess has also spoken about serving easy meals. In an interview published in April 2025 with The New York Times, she said the family sometimes enjoys simple foods such as chicken nuggets, vegetables, and tater tots.
