This is how KATSEYE’s Gnarly inspired Ed Sheeran to write Animal

The singer contacted the global girl group after hearing their breakout song in Mexico

Ed Sheeran has revealed that KATSEYE’s song Gnarly inspired him to contact the girl group and write their new single, Animal. The four-time Grammy winner first heard Gnarly while traveling in Mexico in 2025. He said he immediately liked the song and became interested in working with the now quintet. After reaching out, the songwriter helped make Animal and later shared the story with fans.

“I heard KATSEYE’s song ‘Gnarly’ last year when I was in Mexico and loved it,”  he wrote on his Instagram post. “Said I was a fan and reached out to them to see if I could write them a song. We’ve created ‘Animal’ together, go check it out gang and hope you all love it.”

On July 28, 2026, Ed Sheeran posted a behind-the-scenes video on Instagram showing how the collaboration took place. The video shows him in the studio as he works on the chorus and melody. It also shows Daniela, Lara, and Megan recording their final vocal parts. The video gives fans a look at the process, from the early idea to the completed song. It ends with a short section of the official music video, which presents the group in a darker visual style that matches the song’s elegant and mysterious tone.

Animal was released on July 24, 2026, and is part of KATSEYE’s next EP, titled WILD. Fans are now waiting for the EP, which is scheduled for release on August 14, 2026. The project was also supported by the high-energy dance-pop tune Pinky Up. In addition, The Wildworld Tour, which will be the first of its kind for the girl band. It will begin on September 1, 2026, in Dublin, Ireland.
