Prime Video revealed the first picture of Sophie Turner in her upcoming role as Lara Croft in January 2026, as filming has officially begun for the new Tomb Raider television series. The streaming platform confirmed that production is underway and shared an image of the actor dressed in the iconic green tank top and brown shorts worn by the video game character. The costume design was inspired by Lara Croft’s original appearance in the early Tomb Raider games released for the PlayStation. Meanwhile, Sophie Turner was announced as the lead in September 2025, and the picture marks the first public look at her transformation for the role.
The protagonist has said in previous interviews that she feels a strong responsibility in taking over a character already played by Oscar winners Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in past film adaptations. Sophie Turner’s breakout role was for Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, and she later appeared as Jean Grey in the X-Men franchise. Now, Tomb Raider adds another major role to her career and positions her at the center of a series based on one of the most recognized characters in gaming.
Other cast members include Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs from The White Lotus, and Celia Imrie from Celebrity Traitors. Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote the script for the project, based on the long-running Tomb Raider video game series that began in 1996 and was developed initially by Core Design in the United Kingdom. Known for breaking the mold with a strong female lead, the franchise became a cultural milestone and earned millions of fans around the world. The show was officially greenlit in 2024 and is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios with Story Kitchen and Crystal Dynamics.
