Netflix develops Icebreaker into a new college romance series based on Hannah Grace’s bestselling novel

The streaming platform is adapting the BookTok hit about figure skating, hockey, and forced proximity

Netflix is officially developing a television adaptation of Icebreaker, the bestselling romance novel by Hannah Grace. First published in 2022, the book quickly became a massive success on BookTok and has since sold more than five million copies worldwide. The show joins Netflix’s growing list of book-based series, which includes major streaming hits such as Bridgerton, Heartstopper, Forever, and People We Meet on Vacation. The adaptation will center on the relationship between a competitive figure skater and a college hockey captain whose worlds meet and change on the ice.

The story follows two athletes forced together

The series focuses on Anastasia Allen, a gifted figure skater chasing Olympic success, and Nate Hawkins, the captain of a college hockey team with his own professional ambitions. Their paths cross when an accident forces them to share the same rink, creating a tense and competitive environment that slowly turns into a deeper relationship. Netflix has described the series as a romance in which the desire to win slowly gives way to obsession, raising the stakes both on and off the ice.

“Anastasia Allen and Nate Hawkins collide — and discipline gives way to obsession, because the only thing more dangerous than wanting to win is wanting each other,” the logline shared by Netflix says.

Experienced names are attached to the project

The adaptation will be written and executive produced by Amanda Lasher and Jade Bartlett, with Bartlett reportedly already writing the pilot episode. Lasher will also serve as showrunner. The project is being executive-produced by Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre through Unwell Productions. Alex Cooper is best known for Call Her Daddy, while Matt Kaplan has produced several young adult-focused series, including To All the Boys and XO, Kitty. However, Netflix has not announced any cast members yet, and the series does not have a confirmed release date, although it is currently expected to premiere at some point in 2026.
