The new Illumination movie, ‘Minions & Monsters,’ registers a disappointing debut in the United States, becoming the lowest start in the franchise.
The prequel, set in 1920s Hollywood within the animated universe of ‘Despicable Me,’ premiered on July 1st with positive reviews, generating expectations of reaching $80 million in the first five days of release.
However, its opening weekend in North American theaters fell short of expectations, grossing $61 million, a disappointing figure that even surpassed the first film in the saga from 2010, which reached $56.3 million (not adjusted for inflation).
‘MINIONS & MONSTERS’ had the lowest opening of the franchise with $61.4M.

This low influx of the public would have been due to the July 4th holiday weekend in which people, instead of going to the movies, usually attend barbecues and watch fireworks to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Despite the North American setback, ‘Minions & Monsters’ has grossed $159 million at the global box office, with China, Germany, and the UK and Ireland as the highest-grossing territories, respectively, demonstrating that international support has been key to the success of the animated franchise.
