During a recent interview, Louis Tomlinson opens up about One Direction‘s hiatus and Zayn Malik‘s departure, surprising all his fans with a new statement about the sad ending of this successful and beloved band.

In conversation with Steven Bartlett in ‘The Diary of a CEO‘ podcast, the singer shared his thoughts around his member Zayn’s decision to leave the band: “I thought that we had a relationship where he could’ve had that conversation with me. […] if he told me i would have tried to tell him to stay. […]”.

“If he didn’t wanna do something, he literally wouldn’t do it. […] and that’s what I admire about him. […] I wanna know if he regrets it. […] But it absolutely crushed me. I was absolutely devastated. It felt like, ‘Oh, is this the beginning of the end of the band?'”, said the singer.

Louis Tomlinson continued talking about the mourning for the end of One Direction and the meeting that marked the end of the group, recalling, “It was an atmosphere that you never really felt in the band, because normally… it’s all this camaraderie”.

“I’ve never quite felt an energy like that in the room. There was this emptiness. And I think probably because we all knew collectively where it was going”, the singer called himself ‘so naive’ as he was wondering how long this hiatus would last.

“I’ve never really gotten an answer to that question, which I understand now because truthfully I don’t think the people or person involved was brave enough to answer that question deep down. They probably knew the reality; that’s why it was tough”.
