LE SSERAFIM’s Yunjin reveals how a BTS 2017 performance inspired her KPop career path

The South Korean-American artist reveals she nearly gave up music before joining LE SSERAFIM

BTS’ performance changed her perspective

Yunjin of LE SSERAFIM has shared how BTS inspired her to pursue a career in KPop. In a recent interview for Variety’s “Up Next” podcast, Yunjin said that watching BTS perform “DNA” at the American Music Awards on November 19, 2017, became a turning point in her life. Growing up between Seoul, Wisconsin, and New York, she often struggled with her identity as a Korean-American person. However, seeing BTS succeed on a major American stage made her feel that a future in KPop was possible and motivated her to move to South Korea to train for her dream.

She almost became a college student

Yunjin’s path to debut with LE SSERAFIM was not easy. She trained for years, competed on the survival show “Produce 48” in 2018, and experienced several setbacks. After four years without debuting as a KPop artist, she decided to come back to New York. During her return to the city, Yunjin applied to colleges, was accepted, and even paid a deposit to attend school. Then, one day later, she received a call offering her a place in LE SSERAFIM.

“It literally felt like the stars were telling me where to go,” she revealed.

Music remained the dream she could not leave behind

The 24-year-old explained that her time away from South Korea made her realize she could not let go of music or her dream of telling stories through songs. Within two weeks of receiving the call, she returned to South Korea and began preparing for her debut with LE SSERAFIM. She also spoke about the group’s members, saying. “They truly are my sisters,” sharing a strong connection that goes beyond words.“A lot of it is non-verbal. It’s just something that we feel.”
