Recent reports revealed I-dle‘s Miyeon faces accusations of violating South Korea’s advertising law in the new episode of her YouTube variety show.
On September 1st, the K-Pop idol shared a new video for her show ‘Evangelist,’ where she did her first medical checkup after turning 30 years old, including an endoscopy under sedation, causing great controversy.
A week later, an anonymous citizen filed a formal complaint against Miyeon via the People’s Petition system to the Yongsan Public Health Center in Seoul, demanding the authorities check if the idol has violated the laws on medical advertising.
In South Korea, the law prohibits citizens who are not health professionals from advertising medical centers, and it is also not permitted to show direct and uncensored images of medical procedures, even if they are sponsored or entirely self-funded.
In response, the production team of the YouTube show released a statement clarifying that they did not receive any sponsorship from the hospital for this video, they also admitted their mistake, apologized, and made some changes.
The video was edited by applying blurring to scenes of medical procedures, as well as to hide the logos and infrastructure of the center and the faces of some health professionals, which were exposed in the first version of the video.
