The South Korean media outlets made several reports regarding Cha Eunwoo’s possible punishment for allegedly evading taxes. The idol is currently under heavy scrutiny after he was told to pay more than $13,878,678 in additional taxes.

South Korea’s National Tax Service is demanding that Cha Eunwoo pay the additional taxes. However, specialists claimed that a large part of that amount is actually penalties due to allegedly underreported income or improper methods used to reduce taxes.

These penalties alone can reach 40% of the base amount, with additional charges applied for late payment. The South Korean government reportedly believes this may not have been an honest mistake.

If the NTS determines that the actions were deliberate, the matter would be referred to prosecutors. If the evaded tax amounts are confirmed to exceed $6,936,208.00, Cha Eunwoo could face at least five years in prison, with no option for a suspended sentence.
