BTS’ V beats his record label on trial and wins intellectual property rights

HYBE, the manager company of the worldwide sensation group, BTS, has lost the request of the property of the word “BORAHAE”, due to the fact that it was originally created by one of the members of the group, V.

The fans are celebrating the decision of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, KIPO by it’s abbreviation, which grants Taehyung, better known for his artist’s name, V, the rights to use and trademark the word, which has already been registered.

The term BORAHAE was pronounced by the first time by V on a live transmission on 2016, and since then, it gained popularity among the BTS members and their fans as a synonym for purple, trust, and love in the end.

The word got so popular that even the managing agency of BTS tried to trademark it to use it for commercial purposes on last June, but, as we mentioned before, the request was denied by the authorities of this cases.

When offering an explanation for the outcome of their investigation, the KIPO provided this statement:

“The term “BORAHAE” is a new word created by the BTS member, V, on a reunion with fans on November 13th of 2016”, and also explained that the request could not be accepted for having a malicious intent.

KIPO added that the one and only person or brand with the right to use the word is not HYBE, but V himself, the creator of the word.

In the document, KIPO also signals that Big Hit does not own the rights to the word even if V is part of their brand, due to them only having a work relationship.
