BLACKPINK returns with a new mini-album after years without new music
BLACKPINK returned with a new group project on February 27, 2026, titled “DEADLINE.” The mini-album marked the quartet’s first release in about three and a half years. According to Billboard, DEADLINE debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart with 52,000 equivalent album units. Of that total, 41,000 came from physical album sales, which showed lukewarm enthusiasm from fans.
In addition, DEADLINE opened lower than BORN PINK, which was released in 2022 and reached No. 1 on the same chart with 102,000 album-equivalent units. This means their latest project started seven places below BLACKPINK’s last major group release and had approximately 50% less purchases than BORN PINK.
The album includes five songs and several major contributors
DEADLINE is a five-track EP with a total runtime of 14 minutes and 53 seconds. The songs are “JUMP,” “GO,” “Me and My,” “Champion,” and “Fxxx Boy.” The title track is “GO,” while “JUMP” had already been released in July 2025. The mini-album also includes work from several familiar and notable names. Teddy Park, who has helped shape many of BLACKPINK’s biggest hits, contributed to the project. Other important contributions include EJAE, known for her work in KPop Demon Hunters, Cirkut, and Dr.Luke, who had a prolific career as a producer during the 2010s but has been involved in sexual abuse allegations.
In addition to songwriters and producers, the BLACKPINK members, Lisa, Rosé, Jennie, and Jisoo also contributed to DEADLINE, specifically on the song “GO,” in which they all share songwriting credits with Chris Martin from Coldplay, Danny Chung, and Cirkut.
Why did DEADLINE fall short in comparison to BORN PINK?
While DEADLINE did not have a poor chart result, it does show a stark contrast from the sales and popularity of BORN PINK. There are multiple reasons for what could be considered a lukewarm reception, even though BLACKPINK’s fandom is still as strong as ever.
The first factor to consider is the DEADLINE World Tour, which ended in January 2026. The tour was especially notable because it was described as the group’s first all-stadium tour. However, the global run included only one new group song, “JUMP,” because the DEADLINE EP was released after the tour concluded. This might have affected the popularity of many tracks, as they were not performed to large stadium audiences.
The second factor concerns the number of songs. After approximately four years without a group project, many BLACKPINK fans (also known as BLINKS) were expecting a full-length album, instead of a 5-track mini-album. In addition, YG’s lackluster promotion for the album might have hurt the visibility of the new songs, since there were no events involving the BLACKPINK members reuniting or performing any of the new songs together.
What’s next for BLACKPINK?
Following DEADLINE’s release, recent comments from YG Entertainment founder Yang Hyun Suk suggested that BLACKPINK will not continue group promotions in 2026. Instead, the members are expected to focus on their individual activities, which has left little room for consideration of a new full-length album or performances of the new songs.
