The Academy announces the 98th Oscar nominees in Los Angeles

The Oscar nominations for the 98th ceremony were announced on January 22, 2026, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles. Actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman revealed the contenders across all categories. The biggest news came from Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, which earned 16 nominations. This achievement set a new record for the most nominations received by a single film, surpassing All About Eve from 1950, Titanic from 1997, and La La Land from 2016. Sinners was honored with nominations in major categories, including best picture, directing, original screenplay, and multiple acting categories.

Major films dominate the best picture and directing categories

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another followed closely after Sinners with 13 nominations, including recognition for best picture, directing, adapted screenplay, and several acting nominations. Other films competing for best picture include Bugonia, Hamnet, F1, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Train Dreams. These movies represent a wide range of genres, including drama, science fiction, comedy, and international cinema. Several international productions also earned strong support, particularly The Secret Agent from Brazil, Sentimental Value from Norway, and KPop Demon Hunters from South Korea, which was not eligible for best picture but received recognition in best animated feature.

Acting categories reflect a strong international presence

The acting categories showed a combination of established stars and international talent. Actors from The Secret Agent and Sentimental Value appeared multiple times across leading and supporting categories. Meanwhile, films such as Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value each secured nine nominations, securing their broad appeal. With a diverse catalog of films and creators, the 2026 Oscars reflect a year of strong competition and global representation.

The awards ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026, and will be broadcast by ABC and Hulu.
