For the most part, the songs offer a shot of adrenaline, though they often highlight how routine and familiar the plot beats are. This is particularly evident in the second half of the film, when the songs slow down and the film occasionally forgets it’s a musical. Heavy Girls is fun and makes some clever changes to address the dated elements of the original. Still, it’s hard to shake the sense of deja vu in Fey’s script. If you’ve seen Mark Waters’ 2004 version, you’ve basically already seen Heavy Girls 2024.<\/p>\n
