Shakira will perform a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on May 2, according to O Globo, an international media outlet. The event was then confirmed by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, who shared the announcement on his social media profile and posted a video of one of Shakira’s past performances. With this announcement, the city officially revealed that the “Don’t Bother” singer will be its next artist for its large open-air concert.

The announcement ends weeks of public speculation about who could headline the massive event, which Madonna and Lady Gaga previously led in previous years. The show is part of a cultural program called “Todo Mundo no Rio,” created by the city government to promote large-scale and free public concerts. This initiative has caught the attention of both locals and tourists, who gather in big number on the beach to enjoy these shows.

Mayor Eduardo Paes took to social media and video of Shakira singing “Whenever, Wherever” with the message “Confirmo.” This makes the Colombian artist the third one to headline this Copacabana concert.  In 2024, Madonna performed on the same stage, and in 2025, Lady Gaga achieved a historic record with over 2.5 million attendees in the city. Now, Shakira’s headlining concert arrives during a major cultural period for Rio de Janeiro, with the city positioning itself as a major destination for free international concerts and public festivals.
