Rue Bennett keeps Converse sneakers at the center of the Euphoria series

Zendaya’s character has made black high-top Chucks one of the show’s most iconic wardrobe choices

Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya on HBO’s hit show “Euphoria,” has faced many dramatic moments while wearing the same kind of shoes. Across the many seasons of the series, her black and white Converse Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers have been with her through various plot lines: rehab, family trauma, dangerous choices, and unstable living situations. While many parts of Rue’s life are chaotic, her sneakers have surely remained consistent as a part of her character.

In the show’s latest arc, also known as Season 3, Rue continues wearing the sneakers during major scenes, including a risky trip across the border in the opening episode. Fans have questioned some of her more expensive clothing choices, including luxury items that seem unusual for someone with little stability. Despite that, the Converse sneakers still fit Rue’s image. They are simple, practical, regular, and believable for a teenager who is constantly evolving through difficult situations.

The sneakers also have a long cultural history. Converse introduced the original “Non Skid” basketball shoe in 1917, and Charles “Chuck” Taylor joined the company in 1921. His signature was added to the ankle patch in 1934. The shoes became popular in basketball from the 1920s through the 1960s. They lated return as a casual fashion item from the 1970s through the 1990s, and it’s still currently used. Since “Euphoria” debuted in 2019, Rue’s use of Chucks has helped keep the classic sneaker visible among the show’s audience.
