Netflix plans to release KPop Demon Hunters 2 in theaters worldwide

The movie is headed for theaters worldwide

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the sequel, expected in 2029, is getting a wide theatrical rollout, a big shift from the streaming-first debut of the original.

KPop Demon Hunters is trading the couch for the cinema. Ted Sarandos told the audience at Bloomberg’s Screentime event that the sequel will get a wide theatrical release when it arrives. Deadline and other outlets reported the news on Sept. 30.

The sequel, expected in 2029, will once again be directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the filmmakers behind the original. The original film arrived mainly on streaming. The follow-up is headed for cinemas around the world on a much larger scale.

Sarandos explained that theatrical releases need strong financial potential to justify their possible impact on Netflix’s streaming performance. Alongside the sequel, he pointed to Greta Gerwig’s Narnia as another title getting a wide theatrical push.

Released in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters follows Huntrix, a K-pop girl group whose members secretly protect the world from supernatural threats while living glamorous lives as music stars. The film became a global phenomenon. It passed 300 million views in its first 90 days and topped Netflix’s all-time most-watched movies list.

It also showed its box-office pull. In August 2025, a sing-along version played in cinemas across several countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It reportedly sold out more than 1,300 screenings.

With the sequel still a few years away, fans have time to rewatch. Now they know the next Huntrix chapter is meant for the big screen.
