BLACKPINK’s Lisa is addressing one of the most difficult moments explored in her new documentary, Always Lalisa. In an interview with Variety published on September 14, 2026, the “New Woman” hitmaker reflected on the controversy surrounding leaked videos from the group’s early years that showed members practicing hip-hop songs while saying the N-word. The BLACKPINK member affirmed that she wanted to apologize and went on to explain that she did not understand the significance of the word back then.
“To be honest, I’m Thai and I grew up in Thailand. There isn’t any education for that, so at the time, I didn’t know,” she said.
The videos were recorded more than a decade ago, when the then trainee BLACKPINK members were teenagers. The footage surfaced publicly in 2025 as Lisa prepared for her first solo Coachella performance and had recently released her solo album, “Alter Ego.” Speaking about the incident, she said that she had not received education about that racial slur in Thailand at the time and acknowledged that she needed to apologize. In addition, she revealed that the label involved in the issue did not allow her to address the video.
“Now I’ve learned and got educated about that, and I would never [do it again],” the BLACKPINK member told variety.
Always Lalisa premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2026, and focuses on Lisa through a year of her solo career away from BLACKPINK. The documentary covers projects including her solo album Alter Ego, her acting debut in The White Lotus, and her preparations for the 2025 Coachella festival, while also showing the pressures surrounding her personal and professional life. Always Lalisa will arrive in theaters and IMAX on October 12 and will be available on YouTube Premium later this year.
