SHINee’s Taemin has had such a successful journey in the Kpop scene since the release of his album, “ETERNAL” in 2024. The idol also embarked on a series of concerts as part of his world tour. However, the recent comments about Japan put him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Get to know why.
On July 5, Taemin performed at the “Music Core in Japan” Day 1 at Japan’s Belluna Dome. The idol also held a live broadcast, where he brought up the earthquakes, including the viral prediction in a decades-old manga that a “megaquake” would hit Japan that day.
The idol started making uncomfortable comments about imaginary scenarios where he was singing for the Japanese audience while an earthquake hit. He also wanted to tell fans he would be prepared if it gradually gets more intense, and everyone should be prepared for it. After this, Taemin came under fire for trivializing a major natural disaster, and ultimately, he released a public apology.
Hello, this is Taemin.
I apologize for speaking thoughtlessly about the earthquakes out of a desire to reassure my worried fans. I am reflecting on the fact that I failed to fully consider the situation of the locals or the dangers posed by natural disasters.
I, too, was very worried [about the earthquakes], and I am relieved that they passed without major damage. In the future, I will become a person who thinks more carefully before speaking.
Thank you.
