The Vatican is bringing the next conclave: May 7 is when 130 cardinals will lock themselves away in the Sistine Chapel to pick the next pope. With Pope Francis’ passing at 88, the race is on to find a successor who’ll either carry pastoral vibes or hit rewind to a more old-school approach. The conclave kicks off with a morning mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Then, some serious holy decisions will be made!

But don’t let the robes fool you—this is politics in the form of a prayer. Behind the scenes are several ebates, alliances, scandals, global diplomacy, and a lot of pressure. Only cardinals under 80 can vote, and a two-thirds majority is required to seal the deal. And yeah, no one’s leaving the conclave until white smoke signals the choice of a new pope.
Preparations are already underway, from installing the infamous smoke chimney to figuring out sleeping arrangements (Casa Santa Marta is gonna be packed). As Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni cheekily said, “No one will be left on the street.” Let the holy reality show begin.
