Veteran actress and voice artist Lee Joo Shil passed away on February 2, 2025, at the age of 80. Famous for her warm presence on screen, Lee Joo Shil played the endearing mother of  Hwang Jun Ho and Hwang In-ho in Squid Game 2. According to her agency, 1230 Culture, she fought stomach cancer for three months and ultimately passed at her daughter’s home in Uijeongbu-si, Seoul.

Her remarkable journey through the South Korean entertainment world included countless iconic roles in movies and TV shows like Notebook From My Mother (2017), Commitment (2013), and The City of Violence (2006). Notably, this was not her first battle against cancer. Thirty years ago, at 50, doctors gave her just one year to live after diagnosing her with stage 3 breast cancer—yet she beat the odds back then.

Fans can honor her legacy at Severance Hospital in Sinchon starting February 4, while the funeral is set for February 5. Lee Joo Shil’s enduring spirit and captivating performances will continue to touch and entertain audiences for generations to come.
