Cynthia Erivo, the iconic Elphaba in “Wicked,” isn’t just defying gravity—she’s defying old-school theater rules! During the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the actor gave the green light for fans to sing along in theaters:

“Good! I’m OK with it,” she said in a chat with Today host Hoda Kotb. “We’ve spent this long singing it ourselves; it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.”

But this singing debate isn’t new! AMC Theaters recently aired a video reminding moviegoers, “Silence is golden. No talking. No texting. No singing.” But with Wicked shattering records, including a $164.2M global opening weekend, fans clearly aren’t keeping quiet. While traditionalists might not be feeling Cynthia’s approval for singing, they will have to cope!

Featuring Ariana Grande as Glinda, the movie has become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in U.S. box office history, beating “Grease.” With Part Two slated for 2025, the hype is just getting started. With two weeks on display, it has become the third most important movie event of 2024.
